Quad racing

anybody like to ride quads?  i love to race and my favorite spots are in the california desert; a place called Ocotillo Wells and a place called Borrego Springs.  They're right next to each other in the san diego desert.  i love racing dirt bikes too, but quads are in a league of they're own.  anybody relate?  anybody know these spots?  most popular riding areas in CA

You'll have to forgive my ignorance, when you say "quad"...is that an ATV? A "four-wheeler"?

If so, my uncle lives outside the city and has one. They're fun lol. :D

yeah, 4 wheeler ATV.  i have a suzuki 450 and kev has a honda 400.  we race in the desert (and illegally on the desert streets) at up to 70 mph.  they're a blast.  pull up "ocotillo wells" on google maps, put it on satellite image, and you'll see our favorite riding spot.

i have a question, what's the difference(if any) between quads, ATVs, dune buggies, and go-carts. idk, i'm new to these vehicles, which btw, i'll hopefully be getting a quad soon, idk what kind or anything, i haven't looked at them, any recommendations for beginners?

EDIT: I looked at some today and asked what would be a good beginner quad, and they said for my age and stuff, i should go with a 250 cc quad, and the person recommended a Yamaha Raptor, which was gray/silver with some red, which i actually liked. he let me get on it to try it out and i liked it, so that's most likely the one i'm going with, and i picked out a helmet with a similar color scheme, which was also recommended. now, another question arises: do i need a jacket or gloves or "body armor"(i have no idea what it's called) or anything else for quad riding or will just a helmet be ok?
